Published in 1864, the first edition of X cost just one shilling and initially contained several unrelated topics including notable dates of battles in the English Civil War, the winners of The Oaks, and the rules of quoiting.

The jacket was salmon-pink on the first few editions, only in 1938 did it revert to its present colour. That year also saw the appearance of the now iconic woodcut of the two Victorian gentlemen in tights and trousers.

The Y award instituted by this magazine is one of the oldest honours of its kind. Started in 1889, no person can be chosen twice. From 1927 till 2010, five persons were chosen. Only four were instated in 2011, however, after charges of corruption that made a fifth choice 'unsustainable'.

Claire Taylor became the first female recipient of this award in 2009, joining an illustrious list of nearly 550 male winners.

The magazine broke tradition in 2003 by featuring Z on its cover, the first person ever to do so.

Give X,Y,Z.
